Filter Bag Flow Rates

Comparison of Filter Bag Models by Size and Flow Rate Capacity

Expert Sizing Support: Call 908.362.9981 for assistance with filter bag sizing and cross references to other brands.

Understanding Flow Resistance

The maximum flow rate through a filter bag is determined by its resistance to flow, which is indicated by its initial differential pressure when clean. As filter bag designs become more complex—utilizing thicker materials and multiple layers—the maximum flow rate is naturally reduced.

For example, a standard efficiency #2 size needle felt filter bag has a maximum capacity of 176 GPM. In contrast, a same-sized ACCUGAF filter bag has a maximum flow rate of 66 GPM. This difference exists because the ACCUGAF model is fabricated from thicker, denser material with multiple layers to provide 99.9% efficiency.

Sizing and Capacity Standards

Industry standard filter bags are numbered 1 through 4. While specific models like the "SE, 152, 154 and Certa-Seal" are designed for obsolete Ronningen-Petter bag filter housings, these specialized filter bags remain available for maintenance and replacement.

Filter Bag Performance Comparison Chart

The maximum flow rate chart per filter bag shown above is based upon liquids having a viscosity similar to water and for an initial clean differential pressure less than or equal to 3 PSI.

Custom Calculations and High-Volume Systems

Flow requirements often exceed the capacity of a single bag. We can calculate the specific number of filter bags required for higher flow rates or for fluids with higher viscosities. Furthermore, we can determine the exact configuration needed to maintain a customer-specified clean differential pressure.

System Scalability: Our standard filter housings are available with as many as 24 filter bag chambers, allowing your system to handle flow rates in excess of 4,300 GPM.
